Capsule Wardrobes: What, Why, How

What the heck is a capsule wardrobe? Everyone around seem to be on it, yet you are in a grey zone. Or maybe you know what it is but not convinced you want this. I’ve decided it’s time I make a capsule. Keep reading to know why you need one, too.

What is a capsule wardrobe?

No, it is not some millennial craze. According to Wiki, “it is a term coined by Susie Faux, the owner of a London boutique called "Wardrobe" in the 1970s.” According to me, capsule wardrobe is a real saviour that will make you stop saying “I have nothing to wear.”

The idea is to create a mini-collection of clothes that are easy to combine with one another, that compliment your body and make you feel confident. Basically, it brings you to the point where you pull something out of your closet, and it is a ready to go outfit.

Everyone’s capsule is different depending on lifestyle and climate. My capsule will only include casual clothes. Sportswear, occasional wear, underwear and accessories are capsules in themselves. Same rules apply.

Why making a capsule?

I believe I was born with a good sense of style. But I only sense it in other people! When it comes to me, I struggle to wear a dress in more than two ways.

Apart from finding your style, capsules help you:

▫️save money

Oh boy if I only could get back all those money spent! I would invest it in long-lasting-ethically-sustainably-produced pieces or just donate it for any good cause! What a waste! But lesson learnt. Burn in hell Inditex.

▫️save time

Getting dressed never been easier.

▫️save the planet

Just pleeeease watch The True Cost documentary! It is the least you can do. A year ago this movie turned my world upside down a gave a start to my journey.

There are more less obvious reasons to make a capsule. But I will list them once the collection comes to life, because I don’t want it to be empty words. You know, personal experience and such…

How to create a capsule wardrobe?

Capsule wardrobes go hand in hand with minimalism, but it doesn’t mean you have to wear neutrals and live in a box. For now I’d like to highlight three recommendations I find to be the most important:

1️⃣ Quality over quantity. Go for investment pieces.

2️⃣ Balance between 30-40 garments depending on a situation and don’t obsess over a certain number.

3️⃣ Dress for yourself. You do it for YOU to make YOURSELF happy.

Hopefully I’ve managed to explain what a capsule wardrobe is and got you thinking about giving it a try. And please keep in mind, capsule shouldn’t be another restriction in life. Consider this process your art project, take your time and have fun!
